Dodge Ram 2500

I am looking for a new(used) diesel tow vehicle. I noticed that the Ford and Chevy's have V-8 engines, while the Dodges have I-6 (inline) engines. Does the I-6 engine have comparable towing power to the V-8's? Since it is a six cylinder, does it get better fuel mileage?

Z82 vs. Z85 ?

Does anyone know what the designation Z82 or Z85 means when refering to the trailering equiptment on GM trucks. I am looking at both a Silverado 2500 and a GMC 2500 diesel tow vehicle, one has a Z82 and the other a Z85. Wondering if this has anything to do with tow ratings. If not, what does it mean.

RE: Campgrounds along I-77

we have stayed at the Statesville, North Carolina KOA twice while traveling to Myrtle beach from Akron, Ohio. About an 8hr drive for us. It is just off I-77, but I have never been bothered by highway noise while there. Most sights pull-thru, so it's easy to stay hooked up depending upon your set-up. If you don't want to drive that far, try Fort Chiswell RV Park in Whytheville Virginia, about two hours less drive than Statesville. At the I-77/81 intersection. Look at rvparkreviews.com, they have plenty of reviews for both parks. Good luck.

Has anyone camped here?

Has anyone camped at the Sandusky/Bayshore Estates KOA in Sandusky, Ohio? The KOA website does not have any pictures and rvparkreviews.com has it listed as Bayshore Estates Travel Trailer Park, with no link to a website. I'm thinking this recently has become a KOA. We were thinking of visiting Kalahari Water Park in mid Oct. and are looking for a campground close by.

Best MPG?

I am currently looking into buying a new (new to me) truck. Looking for a 02-06 model diesel, crew cab Chevy, Ford or Dodge. preferably a v-8 with a 3.73 rear axle. Any thoughts on which gets better mpg. Since the majority of time I will not be towing, I need something with decent mpg, but enough power to tow with. I understand there are a few variables here, but anyone with these trucks, if you could chime in and let me know what kind of mpg you are getting. Thanks

Advise on new tow vehicle

O.K. I've finally come to the realization that I need to upgrade my tow vehicle. I currently have a 2004 Chevy Silverado 2500 crew cab 4x4 with a 3.73 rear axle and 6.0L v-8 gas engine. This truck has performed fine here in Ohio, but our recent trip to Florida really put a strain on the engine through the mountains. I ran about 40mph up the mountains of I-77 and had to turn off the ac to get as much power as I could. I would like to upgrade to a diesel Ford F250 or a similar Silverado 2500hd diesel. Any comments on either? My current 5er weighs about 9000lbs loaded.

What else can I do?

I have taken my new 5er out on several trips so far this year, just returning from Disney last night. What I have noticed is that I get different degrees of movement (shaking) when parked at campgrounds. when someone walks I can feel the whole trailer shaking. Some trips alot, some trips not as much. I use the BAL delux tire locking chocks every time. The only thing I do differently is how far I extend the front jacks(stabalizers). Could this be the problem? Do the tripod king pin stabalizers really work? Thanks for any input.

fuel plaza preference?

Does anybody have a preference when stopping for fuel and why? I have seen Pilots, Flying J, TA and a few others. We stopped at a TA on our way back from NY this week and I was not impressed. They had a large fueling area for semi's, but had cars and RV fueling together in a very tight space. Do any of you use the pumps designated for semi's or do they frown on that? Also, do those semi fueling areas have gas and diesel or just diesel? Sorry for all the questions. Had a pop-up prior to my 30+ ft. 5er, so it was never a big concern for me until now.

Bike Racks?

Hi all, I am looking for a frame mount 2" reciever for the rear of my 5er to connect a bike rack to. I have looked on line and not had any luck finding a frame mount reciever for an RV. My thought at this point is to fabricate a piece of metal and weld it to the frame and then weld a reciever to the metal. Anybody done this? or know of a place that makes such an item? I am a little leary about attatching a bumper mount reciever/bike rack. If anybody has a bumper mount system, would you recommend it? or are you not happy with it. Thanks for your input.

West Branch S.P., Ohio

Have reservations for june 21-24 at West Branch SP , Ohio. Reviews are all good. Has anybody stayed there? We are on site 113 (good site, bad site?). Have two boys ages 9 and 12, hopefully plenty to keep them occupied. Any opinions would be appreciated.

Maiden voyage a success?

Just returned from our first trip in our new 5er. Had a great time and weather was sunny all weekend. The learning curve that accompanied going from a pop-up to a 5er wasn't that bad. The only problem: I noticed water leaking into the front pass thru storage just below the shower. The drain line is visable with no leaks. The water is running down between the luan board and the exterior fiberglass. I'm thinking that the water is getting through where the base of the shower meets the shower walls. Anyway, calling the dealer tomorrow, as it is still under warranty, the only problem is that the dealer I bought it from is 3 hours away and the local dealer has the attitude "if you didn't buy it here, we can't get to it for three months." It's the little surprises in life that keep it interesting.

RE: **BEWARE** Jellystone Park, Mantua, Ohio

Update: Just returned from Jellystone. Park very busy as it was Memorial Day Weekend. I noticed the new uniforms on the employees, and I have to say, I was impressed with how the CG was run during an extremely busy time. Restrooms were clean, trashed picked up at your site several times a day, Eleven pm quite time respected by most. Overall, an enjoyable experience. Camperguy2001, sorry for the bad experience. I have noticed, that when a CG changes owners, it takes a little while to work out all the kinks. We will be back.

RE: cleaning rv

I too use regular car/dish soap to wash my 5er. Awsome works great at removing the black streaks. Tried protect-all after washing and am very impressed. goes on/off super easy and left the camper with a smooth , clean finish

Leveling a 5er

What's the best location on the 5er to check for level side to side. Brought my new 5er home yesterday from storage and checked for level on the kingpin and on the rear bumper. After placing boards under appropriate tires and bubble showing level, I extended slide out. Just to double check I placed level on counter and bubble was off. Where do you all place your level? Thanks.

RE: **BEWARE** Jellystone Park, Mantua, Ohio

Been there several times and never had any of the problems that you mention. Always have seen lifeguards and never heard of any property being stolen. I do agree, the bathrooms could be cleaner, but we rate this as one of our favorite campgrounds. We will be there Memorial Day Weekend. Hope it hasn't changed.

RE: Campgrounds information

We stayed at the Statesville, NC. KOA last summer on our way from Ohio to Myrtle Beach. About a 7.5 hr drive from Akron. CG is just off of I-77. CG is good for an overnight stop and mostly pull-thru sights so you don't have to unhook. Camping World close by. As I said, good for an overnight stop so don't expect anything special. Safe, and friendly staff. We are stopping there again this summer for a stop-over on our way to Disney.

RE: Considering Coachmen Chaparral

I have a 2007 Coachmen Chaparral 269bhs (the newer version of the 281). Bought it last fall. Getting ready to take it on its maiden voyage next week. Towed it 3.5 hrs home and barely new it was behind me. 6.0 L v-8 gasser. You will get good reviews and not so good reviews on Coachmen, but then again, the same holds true for any manufacturer. If you like the floor plan and all looks good, including the frame, roof, axles and body, go for it.

Fort Wilderness to Myrtle Beach

Stopping in Myrtle Beach on our way back from Disney World this summer. Mapquest directions say to use exit 33 off of I-95N just north of Hilton Head and continue up 17N. Would it be quicker to stay on I-95 to Florence and then cut over on 76(301) to 501? I prefer to travel highways and stay away from small towns. Anybody who is familiar with this area, your help would be greatly appreciated.

Another tire question

O.K., I have seen multiple threads on Chinese made tires and how many are dissatified with them. My new 5er has Goodyear ST tires that were made in Canada. What's the thoughts on Canadian made tires. The tires were manufactured in April of 2006, so no thoughts of replacing them anytime soon. Pretty sad, I live in the city that was once the rubber capital of the world (Akron, Ohio), and now it's hard to find an American made tire.
